WHAT IS FLOATATION THERAPY?

An Effortless Way to Gain the Physical and Mental Benefits of Deep Meditation

Discovered in the 1950s at the National Institute of Mental Health and popularized as a therapy in the 1970's, floatation therapy (also known as sensory deprivation) removes all stimulation to your senses in order to trigger a deep relaxation response. This is done through various float environments, such as float pods , tanks, and open float rooms. These environments are designed to keep out all light and sound as the client floats like a cork in a hyper-salinated solution of magnesium sulfate (Epsom Salts). The only thing you may hear is your heart beating. After 30-40 minutes in this perfect dark, you will find yourself thinking one thought at a time accompanied with a mental and physical calm much like the calm you experience when you first wake up out of a restful sleep. A highly-effective truly unique experience.

HOW ARE THE TANKS KEPT CLEAN?

The tanks are on a constant cleaning schedule. All we do here is clean! They are set to automatically self clean through a specific filter system in between clients. In addition to the sterilization properties of the 850-1,500lbs of Epsom Salt , we check and adjust the the ph of the tanks daily to stay between 7.3 and 7.6. We also keep the tanks at 2ppm of sodium hypolchlorite in order to maintain cleanliness. We personally check the tanks between sessions for clarity and to see if anything is amiss.

IS FLOATING DANGEROUS?

By itself, floating is an incredibly safe practice. You float without effort. Magnesium sulfate is an electrolyte that your body thrives on. Floating may be dangerous for someone with a kidney disorder (because of the magnesium absorbtion), someone who is schizophrenic (due to the profound quietude), someone who is under the influence of a dissociative drug  (such as psilocybin or ketamine), or someone who has epilepsy and is NOT on medication.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?

We try to provide everything you need to float from start to finish. We provide towels, slippers, shampoo, conditioner, q-tips, cotton swabs, earplugs, and there is a hair dryer in the bathrooms as well. You  only need to bring yourself and an openness to the experience of floating.

IS THIS GOING TO WORK FOR ME? I'VE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FLOAT.

It is impossible to sink in the float tank.It would defy the laws of physics. We keep the density of the tank between 1.27 and 1.33, which is greater than the Dead Sea (1.24).

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

We have a 24 hour cancellation policy for floats. We understand that life circumstances get in the way. So we currently ask that you let us know as soon as possible if you have to cancel or reschedule your float. If you repeatedly cancel, however, we may ask that you pre-pay for your sessions going forward or we may use any of your existing float credits for the session.

WHAT KIND OF CONTROL DO I HAVE OF MY SESSION?

Control is an important element to being relaxed especially for those who are claustrophobic. Therefore, we want to give our clients as much control as possible. During your session, you will be able to lock the door to your room if you wish (To prevent casual entries. Staff will still be able to enter in an emergency). You can control the lights in the room and the tank -if and when they go off and on. The door to the pod only closes when you decide to close it and you can open it manually in an emergency. You can also turn off the music if you have it set to play the whole time. And, of course, you can just get out if you are not comfortable for any reason.Let us know why and we can keep the credit on your account if something was wrong.

CAN I FLOAT IF I AM PREGNANT?

There are many pregnant mothers who float at Rise Above to get relief from the effects of pregnancy and we actually have some recommended techniques and illustrations that we can share to maximize the float tank for expectant moms at any stage. That being said, always consult your doctor before floating to see if it's right for you.

IS THERE ANYONE WHO SHOULDN'T FLOAT?

People under the influence of a dissociative drug, such as mushrooms or ketamine, schizophrenics, non-medicated epileptics, people with kidney disorders, people with fresh tattoos, people who recently had a hair coloring or keratine treatment. We also recommend that extremely older people with severe mobility issues re-consider floating as we find that the challenges of entering and exiting the tank can negate any relaxing benefits.

IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT ON FLOATING?

There is no hard and fast rule on age. Children should be accompanied by a parent. A child that is so young that they may not be able to control their bladder, we may ask for a $1000 deposit to protect us in the event of an accident.

DO I FLOAT IN THE SAME ROOM WITH OTHER PEOPLE?

Your experience is completely private. You have your own float room with your own private shower and your own float tank. You can lock the door if you wish and feel secure in your solitude. This serves to provide the best experience and is also required by the Health Department.

CAN I JUST FLOAT FOR A HALF HOUR?

We are pretty flexible as regards to float times with one exception. We do not offer anything less than an hour for float sessions. The reason for this is it takes time for the brain to slow down to enter the Theta State, at least 35 to 40 minutes. If a session was as short as, say, half and hour, the floater may not experience the actual effects of the float session and, therefore, not gain the benefits that being in the Theta state provides.

WHAT'S THE LONGEST I CAN FLOAT FOR?

Our longest float time during regular business hours is currently 3 hours long. However, we will occasionally host Overnight Floats. This would start at 11pm and end at 7am. We would happy to book you an overnight with the two conditions of having all three tanks booked and an available float host to be present (and awake!) Overnight sessions are $290 a person.

HOW LONG WILL MY SESSION BE IN TOTAL?

Your actual float time is the time you sign up for. However, you get an additional 5 minutes to take a pre-float shower and an additional 20 minutes for your post-float shower and time to get dressed. You should plan to be here for a minimum of 90 minutes if you book a 60 minute session and 2 hours if you book a 90 minute session.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I FLOAT?

The float tank is a tool that can be used for a multitude of reasons. The optimal frequency of your float sessions would be based on your personal situation and goals. Some people find a weekly session works best for long-term benefits and staying centered. Some of our clients float twice a week, others once a month, and some people come whenever the mood strikes them. If you find you would like to float frequently and regularly, reach out to us! We can come up with a more affordable option to suit your needs.

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO ONCE I'M IN THE FLOAT TANK?

Nothing! You don't need to meditate in order for the float tank to work nor do you need to do any exercises. The beautiful thing about the float tank is that the benefits come from a natural physical response to removing stimulation from the body. That being said if you wish to follow a guided meditation or listen to binaural beats from your phone, let us know and we can plug your phone into your float tank's sound system at the front desk.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF DAY TO FLOAT?

There is no universal best time for floating as every experience is unique to the person and their goals in floating. Morning floats tend to be good for setting good intentions and moods for the day or week while afternoon/evening floats help folks get into a deeper state of mind that comes from not having anything planned after their float. Like all things related to floating, your float experience will not be like anyone else's and discovering your personal process is part of the journey.

DO I NEED TO WEAR A BATHING SUIT?

In the interest of discovering your personal process, you are free to wear a bathing suit. But, we always recommend not wearing anything because like the bathing cap, it can become something that detracts from your experience. Keep in mind that the room is yours and yours alone and completely private and your shower is placed right next to your tank, so you can step right out of the shower and into your session and back into your shower when your are done. Of course, if you feel more distracted without a bathing suit, that may be the better path for you to take.

SHOULD I SLEEP IN THE FLOAT TANK?

Some people come just to sleep in the tank and, yes, you will get a good sleep in there. We are of the mindset that you should either stay awake or be in between awake and asleep for the duration of your session as that's where the benefits will be felt the most. By staying awake, you will retain control of your focus which is the element of the experience that grants the deepest relaxation. When you fall asleep, you give up control of your focus and open yourself up to the possibility of your mind going to anxious places or the like.

SHOULD I EAT BEFORE A FLOAT?

The rule of thumb here is that nothing should be done that would take away by distracting you. So, you shouldn't be hungry in there but you don't want to eat too much either. A small snack before is probably a good idea. The same applies for drinking fluids. You don't want to be dehydrated but you also don't want to get out  to pee during your session either.

WILL MY HAIR GET WET? CAN I WEAR A BATHING CAP?

One thing that we can say pretty confidently is that you are going to get your hair wet. You should come with that in mind. You are welcome to try to wear a shower or swimmer's cap but most people who try to use them have reported that in the float environment the awareness of the cap is so distracting as to detract from the float experience.

WILL SOMEONE BE AVAILABLE TO HELP ME IN AND OUT OF THE FLOAT TANK?

Unfortunately , we will NOT be able to assist anyone in and out of the tank for liability reasons. You can bring someone with you if you like and we can advise on ways of getting in and out of the tank but, unless there is an emergency, we are not equipped to help clients in and out of the tank. We do not recommend that folks with severe mobility issues should float.

CAN I LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE I FLOAT?

Yes you can! We recommend complete silence but every one does things their own way. We have music that is designed exclusively for float tanks that plays for a few minutes at the beginning and end of each session, which we can play for you continuously upon request. We can also plug your phone into our system if you would like to play something that you prefer. If you get tired of the music during your session, there is a button in the tank that you can press to turn it off.

IS THE PRICE DIFFERENT FOR EACH ROOM?

While each room is unique in it's size and set up, each room is the same price per session. We think it's important for the client to be in control of what environment they're in so they can get the maximum benefits of being in control. Please note that there is only one floater allowed per tank.
